The Saint Francis Health Care Foundation
Established in 1983, the Saint Francis Health Care Foundation provides financial support to benefit the essential mission of Saint Francis Hospital and Health Centers. The Foundation, a separately incorporated, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, is governed by a Board of Trustees that oversees its fund-raising and grant-making activities. Generous gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies support a variety of areas including hospital expansion projects, the purchase of the latest equipment and technology, and programs and services that are critical to providing patients and their families with the best care. All gifts made to the Saint Francis Health Care Foundation are fully tax-deductible as prescribed by law, as no services or goods of value are provided in consideration of contributions.

Empire Zone
In 2004 Saint Francis Hospital received news of its designation as a Poughkeepsie/Dutchess Empire Zone Community Development Project. Therefore, donors (individuals or corporations) who make gifts of $1,000 or more to projects at the Poughkeepsie campus – including the Emergency and Trauma Expansion, Operating Room improvements, and Patient Care Unit renovations – will be eligible to receive an additional 25% tax credit (applied to NYS tax return) in addition to standard deductions. Donations must be made either by cash, credit card, or by shares of stock. All gifts must be made before December 31, 2006. Unused tax credits can be carried forward for use in future years. The Saint Francis Health Care Foundation will provide the form required for tax purpose. Link to Download Forms & Applications

Caring with Excellence
The Foundation’s Annual Campaign, Caring with Excellence, primarily supports patient care enhancement projects and the purchase of state-of-the-art medical technology and equipment. Recent projects have included the renovation of the 4 Cooke Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Floor and the 6 Cooke Medical-Surgical Floor, including the refurbishment of all patient room and consultation rooms, and the expansion of the pneumatic tube system to expedite the delivery of specimens and medicine among departments. Upcoming projects include the renovation of the Critical Care Units on 3 Cooke and the renovation of the 5 Cooke Orthopedic-Medical-Surgical Floor.

Expanding Trauma and Emergency Services

The busiest Level II Trauma Center in New York State, the George T. Whalen Family Trauma Center of Saint Francis Hospital provides exceptional, lifesaving care to more than 9,000 adults and children each year. Combined with the James J. McCann Emergency Care Center, over 31,000 patients are treated annually.

The Hospital is undertaking a major expansion of its Trauma and Emergency Care Centers, starting with the Fr. Brinn Center for Psychiatric Care within the Emergency Care Center that was dedicated in September 2003. As the designated receiving hospital for Dutchess County, Saint Francis Hospital treats all individuals – from young children to the elderly – requiring urgent behavioral health care.

The next phase of the $8 million project will more than double the size of the existing facilities to over 18,000 square feet and will include the creation of a new prompt care unit; over 20 new, private patient care rooms; expanded trauma bays; a state-of-the-art decontamination unit; children’s suite; and a new central nurses station. Gifts to the Foundation may be designated for this historic project, and recognition opportunities are available.

Building a New Center for Communication and Learning for Special Needs Children.

Saint Francis Hospital is the region’s largest provider of services for preschool-age children with special needs, currently serving approximately 450 children annually, in five locations – about five times larger than the next largest provider in the community.

Children receiving services include those diagnosed with Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Asthma, and Neuromuscular and Oral Disabilities. Additionally, children experiencing trauma, seizure disorders, or psychiatric problems also receive interventions. Due to increasing number of preschool-age children with medical conditions requiring interventions and therapy to address developmental disabilities and delays, Saint Francis Hospital is seeking to expand its services by constructing a new preschool facility on its Beacon Campus. The expansion will allow for additional capacity at other hospital preschool sites in Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Red Hook and Millbrook, as children currently commuting to other locations are relocated closer to their homes.

The Saint Francis Health Care Foundation is seeking to raise $1.4 million from the community to build the new Center for Communication and Learning on the hospital’s Beacon Campus off of Route 52. The 8,500 square foot Center will house classrooms, individual treatment rooms, physical and occupational therapy suites, and a therapeutic playground, as well as evaluation and treatment space for the Hospital’s Center for Communication Disorders to serve children and adults requiring speech, hearing, and/or swallowing evaluation and therapy.

Gifts to the Foundation may be designated for the Center for Communication and Learning, which is scheduled to break ground in 2005. Recognition opportunities are available.

Tribute Gifts
The Saint Francis Health Care Foundation offers donors a variety of opportunities to pay tribute to loved ones and express appreciation to their physicians and hospital caregivers. Gifts made in memory of or in honor of individuals are recognized in the Foundation’s newsletter, with permanent recognition opportunities within the hospital also available.

Scholarship and Recognition Program
Each year, the Foundation sponsors a Nursing and Allied Health Careers Scholarship Program, the Sister Ann Elizabeth Award for Nursing Excellence, and the Saint Francis Hospital Award for Physician Excellence.
